Great show with REAL(ity) potential. I just love the exploration of reality vs fantasy.
Who is to say what is real and what is fantasy if the "experience" has the same effect on the human mind?
Think of all of the wonderful benefits of virtual reality - The wheelchair bound walking; The shy nerd developing confidence enough to perform on stage; The ability to experience DEATH and bring that experience BACK to the land of the living, to share with others. Have you ever seen the movie "Brainstorm" with Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood?
And then there are the NEGATIVE aspects of virtual reality - The virtual rape which leaves the "victim" with all of the psychological effects of the actual experience and none of the physical wounds.
Virtuality is on a completely different level from past sci-fi series, much like BSG with wonderfully developed characters, phenomenal special effects and excellent acting. REAL potential. I hope there will be more to come.
Virtuality does have a few negatives though. The presentation appears superficial, lacking depth when characters interact. The words spoken by the actors and actresses are expressed with sincerity but some of the scene comes off like many FOX TV programs ("24" or "TSCC"), almost tabloid in style, trying to over-dramatize the situation and lacking subtlety. At times, Virtuality played like a soap opera, "spoon feeding" the viewer, trying do too much in too short a time.
Whatever network picks up Virtuality, I'll be there to watch. Personally, I would like to see NBC or SyFy pick it up. In my humble opinion, FOX lacks the ability to appreciate something on this level. Just ask Joss Whedon. Oh, and FOUR EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS?! What's that about?
Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
